The other day I got some felt-decorated clothespins - 100 yen (around $1) for a set of ten. As a result, my seldom-used work station - not to be confused with my constantly busy dinner table/computer desk/work station - feels a bit nicer now.

Crummy, crummy photos. My camera hates taking pictures in poor lighting situations, so I had poorly photoshop everything so you could see all the useless items on my desk. Do you see the red hot glue gun lying on the lower left-hand side of the table? I bought it several months ago, and I finally used it yesterday to fix my red barrette. I also used it to stick a blue ribbon to a pretty bottle (now transformed into a vase).
And now it's off to the post office to deliver Set One of mailing. Set Two coming soon!

My last big trip for awhile, I think. I didn't sleep as much as I used to, so each night so far is blessed with immediate slumber and before sleep, long stretches of waiting and staring at things to be folded and put away. Also, lots of clicking noises. I'm feeling a need for adjustment, so I have plans for redecoration and am now looking at pictures of kittens online for comfort.
A big thank you to Sophie for letting me stay with her in Kunming, showing me around, and translating everything for me :) Kunming was the most interesting place to visit, as a result!
"Animalania" ends soon (March 14) at Fuse Gallery in NYC. Sad I can't see it.

Sending out some letters and postcards and such, so let me know your address if you want one.
Now it's time for lunch.

I have taken an even more ghostly presence around here lately. My apologies. I have been busy burning off the roof of my mouth, worrying about tax forms I haven't started yet, and so on & so forth. I wish I could say I've been sleeping most of the time, but I've been having difficulty sleeping lately (Why doesn't my body want me to sleep? I love to sleep). I also made two little books when the roof of my mouth wasn't melting away:

Hat Collection. Go here for more.

The Sinister Winter and the Inflatable Suit. Go here for more.
I will be traveling soon, too, to Bangkok, Kunming (China), and Hong Kong. I suppose I have to get a few places out of the way before the world disintegrates. If you have any advice or stories about these places, please tell me :)

As it gets cold, I have been eating a lot of red bean soup with mochi and oatmeal with brown sugar.

Life has been about a) working (for money), b) working on a comic, c) studying Japanese, and d) eating. My dream is to one day do away with a) and sleep and bake all day, waking up every morning to a pillow lightly covered with survival money. I suppose that might be everybody's dream, though.

I'm making a comic, and it's completely frustrating. I want to dive into a sea of origami paper rather than make a comic or study for the GRE (I'm taking it next week). Looking at Korilakkuma (Rilakkuma's white bear friend) wearing a moose hat helps, though, to calm the nerves.
In highly exciting culinary news, I am eating persimmons again! I dream of gorging on a nice pumpkin pie, though, and perhaps a cheesecake and a...moose croissant.
Oh, and speaking of which, I have two moose croissants for sale. Each is 10,000,000,000 yen, so please pay up quickly.

I seem to only talk about the weather on here, but I must say, the weather has gotten much nicer lately. As a non-hot weather person, I loathe sticky summers where my clothes seem to melt and writhe against my skin.
I think about the future lately, I guess. I'm applying to graduate school. Work is eh, but I got a side job helping to translate an academic paper, which gets me excited.
I'm still incredibly sleepy, and I am eating persimmons again.
I bought some bento boxes and some panda bear tie-things to keep them tightly shut, and I am going to start filling them up with food for lunch at work from now on.
I own too many umbrellas now, and I think goats are really cute.

Long time no see. I do not have internet access at home at the moment, so I have been a bit confused and out of the loop lately.
So what have I been up to? Well, I have been very busy napping - taking breaks every once in awhile to read or look at animals. Right now, though, I am in the rare state of wakefulness. I am even awake enough to show you some ANIMAL images! Animals are very cute and much nicer than human beings, so I prefer staring at animals rather than humans.
So...ANIMAL NUMBER ONE.

A polar bear!!
ANIMAL NUMBER TWO
Squirrels! I am hanging out with squirrels at the SQUIRREL PARK in this picture.
(thank you to r. chinchilla for the photograph)
ANIMAL/CREATURE/THING NUMBER THREE

A man-eating amoeba!!
Also, I am working on a project with jogs6000 (who showed me the ways of the Cat-Eyed Boy! I am thisclose to finally finishing the book. I am reading it in Japanese, so I have been very, very lazy and slow making my through it). More news about the project later, after I have yet another glorious nap.

I've been drawing lately, despite the fact that mosquitoes have practically gnawed my hands off.

(This one is a collaboration with dzima, renga-style)
Two more weeks of sun-drenched, sky-diving, beach-going, jet-skiing bliss? Or...perhaps none of those things.

swill and Anna came over to Puffy AmiYumi (or, well, maybe just Ami)'s home city for the holidays, and we drank bucketfuls of tea together. Occasionally, we went outside to fill our lungs with fresh air, but we were quick to scurry inside, as none of us can spare much time away from the computer.
The days were cold. Mika and Anna nearly got frostbitten from the winds that fiercely blew through my apartment. Therefore, they decided to join forces and merge themselves into a giant, semi-warm earthworm made of piles of yellow fabric.

This is a drawing from one my students, Shun. I let my class make holiday cards after taking their final exams, and some of my students decided to make cards for me, and this one is my favorite. Shun is very creative, and I think his card demonstrates this very well -- a blonde woman in a Santa outfit smoking a cigarette? And, are those red, high-heeled boots I see?
I hope you enjoy this drawing as much as I do.
Some sights I see on my treks to the grocery store / currency exchanges:

The weekend was long and made my scalp itchy.
I am content at the moment because I have just discovered that my computer power adapter makes a wonderful foot warmer. Those cold nights in Japan are over.

a) I can't get to sleep because it's too cold. I've never been affected that much by seasonal changes, but perhaps a summer spent in California - and the realization that the sun is actually nice and does not necessarily cause allergies or icky humidity - has made the gray weather seem gloomy.
b) People think I'm Japanese here (at least in terms of appearances), but for some strange reason, I am paranoid that - when going out by myself - people will somehow realize I'm not Japanese. I really am not Japanese, and furthermore, I am not ashamed to be foreign, so I don't quite understand why I play this game with myself. I am constantly making up rules/behavioral codes for myself based on what I think is the "most Japanese" thing to do in terms of train-sitting-feet-placement and so on. These rules are often my own made-up creations, but sometimes I convince myself that they are true.
I got asked for directions in the train station twice in one day one time, and I panicked and got scared and said things very fast and very quietly, hoping they wouldn't detect my accent. Of course, I ended up sounding mangled and possibly insane.
Edit: I did end up falling asleep after putting on more layers. What I wore last night --
-socks -hooded sweatshirt (with hood on) -long-sleeved shirt -scarf -two layers of pants

San Francisco Pride Parade 2007 (June 24, 2007)
Life is good at the moment - when will the pendulum swing the other way around? - as I've been enjoying the fall weather. The fall weather came rather late for me, as I'm usually used to colder weather seeping into September days, not late October days.
I'm enjoying the little things about Japan, like getting to pay my electricity bill at the nearby convenience store (My enjoyment of this will probably end soon enough) and watching the little cartoon attendant bow after I put money on my Suica card.
I ran into two Mormon missionaries on my way to the train station today. Actually, they were very nice women, and I was tempted to meet with them again because I thought My Japanese could really improve if I just pretend to be interested in what they're saying, but then I remembered that I'm not religious and would probably get migraines if I became so.
My feet are cold. I need thicker socks.
